The next leg of our journey took us to Brisbane. We decided to hitch a ride to the Cairns airport with Bec, and fly down to Brisbane.
We had planned Brisbane as being a place that we would find a place for a few months, get jobs and work a little bit while still traveling. Brisbane was ideal since it was the next large city south, the weather is amazing here (25 every day – it rarely rains!) It was also an attractive place to stay due to it being a little over an hour to both the Sunshine Coast to the North and the Gold Coast to the South.
Our first 2-3 weeks in Brisbane involved a lot of moving around, looking for a place to settle.
The first four nights we stayed at the YHA Brisbane, which is super close to downtown and close to the train station where we arrived.
Our room basically had a bed and a dresser – but the YHA itself had a lot of awesome stuff. The kitchen is shared among everyone in the hostel, but it has like 8 different stove stations so it never really feels too busy. They also have morning and night staff that clean up around the kitchen so it is always nice and clean. The view from the roof is amazing as it overlooks the city business district (CBD – what we would call downtown). It also had a pool on the roof for hot days.
The one downside to the YHA was that it cost a bit much for us. On our first few days there we started looking for a new place to live that was longer term. We had also booked a few courses to do – a barista course, an alcohol mixing course and a responsible service of alcohol (Australia’s version of Smart Serve), so we were very busy.
The next place we booked was through airbnb.com and it was a one bedroom apartment on the other side of the city. We could only book it for a week since the owner was coming back the following week. It was in a suburb called Fortitude Valley – where Chinatown was, and where all the party bars are.
The place was huge! A nice kitchen, big bedroom, 2 balconies – one on each side of the flat.
So after a week of staying here and searching for another place to live, our week had run out. We managed to look at a few places, some of which we did not like, one that we did like but the owners went with someone longer term.
After that week we ended up back at the YHA, still looking for a place. After about 2 days there we found a place that we liked – it was super cheap, in a good location and it was our own unit. We took a look at it and told the lady that we would take it. They were moving out on the 13th so we had another 9 days or so in the YHA.
So after a whirlwind of 2 weeks, moving around we finally have a place to call home for the next 3 months!
