Here in Brisbane, one of the most popular beer companies is Castlemaine Perkins. They make a few different beers, XXXX Gold, XXXX Bitter and XXXX Summer (Pronounced Four X). Their main brewery was just down the street from the YHA we were staying at.
We were checking the website to do one of the brewery tours when we found out that it was their 10th anniversary of doing tours, so tours were now only $10 per person (down from $26). We booked instantly. It didn’t take long to convince a few of our friends from the YHA to book along with us.
The tour was fairly interesting, we learned about the history of the company, saw the giant vats where the beer is created, and saw the conveyer belts where the beers are bottled, put in cases and shipped from. We were not allowed cameras in the tour area due to the privacy of the workers.
The reason that their beers are called XXXX is because back when people were brewing their own beers and selling it – they labelled each batch with an X, one X being the least favorable brew and XXX being the best. Castlemain Perkins thought that their beers were the best, highest quality beer – so they added another X making their beers XXXX (Four X).
After the tour we came out to the XXXX onsite bar where we got 4 free beers with each tour. Now the prices of beer here in Australia are high – sometimes double that of Canada, so a tour and 4 beers for $10 was an amazing deal. They had live music at the bar, and the NRL (National Rugby League) finals were on that evening as well, so we decided to stay and have our drinks there for the night.
Since it was their 10th anniversary, they had a few of the original wooden kegs with their first beer (the XXXX Bitter) in them. They were tasty!
I would recommend anyone in the Brisbane area check this tour out – it was totally worth it.
