We woke up bright and early (5AM) and got ourselves packed for a day of travel. It began with a half hour drive to Melbourne airport where we were catching a plane over to Christchurch, New Zealand. The flight was only 4 and a bit hours and it went by pretty fast.
We then boarded the smallest commercial plane that I have ever been on – a 16 seater. The flight from Christchurch to Hokitika was only about 45 minutes; there were only about 10 of us on the flight along with the 2 pilots. It was interesting since we were able to see all of the flight monitors and equipment.
This flight was also the most beautiful flight I have ever been on. We were flying right over large groups of mountains with lush green vegetation. Some of the valleys had smaller towns and large farms on them, but most of the flight was endless mountains, trees and lakes. The south island of New Zealand is a big change from the orange/browns of dry southern Australia.
We arrived in Hokitika at the smallest airport I have ever been in, and grabbed our rental car to start the trip in Hokitika. We booked a full week at Mountain Jade Backpackers in Hokitika and are really excited to start our journey in New Zealand.
